Folks, I want you to know there's more going on than just instrumental rock anthems here on the Jerome Freely channel! Today we bring you an original [checks notes] indie R&B track, called "We're in the Place."
Like most of the stuff I've been sharing recently, this was a song I wrote for a Song Writing and Recording Challenge (SWARC) in the fall of 2023, and the prompt was "love." Like all the SWARCs, it was done in a week, but I did do a bit of additional tweaking on this one afterward because I needed to fix some problems with the vocal levels.
I think I started with the title. I was thinking about how when you are in a really strong relationship, it can sometimes feel like you've "made it" and you kinda want to pat yourself (or each other?) on the back. So this song is a little bit of gentle bragging about how awesome my marriage is, you know, the way some artists sing about how much money and how many cars they have.
I really like this one. I think I will make at least one more version; after I wrote this, I stole some of the lyrics to go into a different song where I think they fit slightly better. So I need to replace them with something else. But other than that, I feel like it's basically done. I'll post an update when (or if?) I make those changes.
